Social Security Claiming Guide

The Social Security Claiming Guide

By Steven Sass, Alicia H. Munnell, and Andrew Eschtruth

The Social Security Claiming Guide is designed to help people who are approaching retirement decide when to claim their benefits.  The Claiming Guide presents information in an engaging format, using clear and concise language and colorful illustrations and graphics.  It opens by highlighting the large effect of the readers’ claiming age on the monthly benefits they will collect for the rest of their lives.  It frames the decision by asking readers how much income they and their surviving spouse will need in retirement and discussing the characteristics of income from other sources, including traditional pensions and 401(k)s.  It discusses how benefits are set, including spousal and survivor benefits.  The Claiming Guide’s final section covers a series of frequently-asked questions on the interaction between work and claiming, risks to consider, and special rules for government workers.  A separate brochure includes highlights from The Social Security Claiming Guide, which is a companion publication to The Center for Retirement Research’s The Social Security Fix-It Book.
